Age 66
Following a long and courageous battle with cancer, Mabeth passed away surrounded by loving family, at her home in Frankfort, Kentucky on Wednesday, July 21, 2010.
A native of Owensboro, Kentucky and daughter of Mrs. Jane Kirkpatrick Rayburn and the late John L. Kirkpatrick, Mabeth is survived by her loving spouse Mike Guffey and her three sons ; John H. "Hal" Helmers, Jr. (Heidi), David L. Helmers (Anne), Lee C. Helmers (Kelli) and six loving grandchildren: Laney, Jack, Lucie, Lee, Henry, and Alex Gray.
She is also survived by her mother Jane Kirkpatrick Rayburn, sister Paddy Kirkpatrick Miller, brothers John L. "Kirk" Kirkpatrick and Steve J. Kirkpatrick.
Mabeth was blessed with a multitude of loving and devoted friends. Mabeth made friends "for life". Mabeth and the friends she cultivated; either from childhood, schools, the workplace, neighborhood or other activities remained in touch throughout her life. Her many friends and the longevity of their friendships was as a result of her beautiful smile, positive outlook, great sense of humor, contagious sense of fun and her knack for bringing people together and making them comfortable. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Mabeth was an avid reader and devoted most of her working career to Adult Literacy. She spent the last 15 years of her career coordinating literacy programs throughout Kentucky.
Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Friday, July 23rd, 2010 from 5:00 PM-7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held at 2PM on Saturday the 24th of July at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in her memory to The Caring Bridge (www.caringbridge.org) or the American Lung Association (www.lungusa.org/donate). Immediately following the memorial service a reception will be held at The Miller House from 3:00PM to 5:00PM at 301 East 5th Street. Friends are invited to the reception to share their memories and celebrate Mabeth's life.
