Lucy Glenn Taylor, 88, of Owensboro passed away Monday, January 4, 2010 at her home. Born in Owensboro, the daughter of the late Delbert J. and Ann Glenn, she was a graduate of Owensboro High School and Stephens College. A life-long member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church, she belonged to the Mary Lou Phillips Sunday School Class, the Emma Deacon Circle, the United Methodist Women and had served her church as she was needed, participating with the Administrative Board, the Staff Parrish Committee, the Memorial Committee, the Hospitality Committee and contributing to the needlepoint work on the altar. She succeeded her late husband, Ira P. Taylor, Jr., who passed away in 1978, as president of Glenn Funeral Home and Secretary of Owensboro Memorial Gardens until her retirement. Mrs. Taylor was a third generation funeral director and the mother and grandmother respectively of fourth and fifth generation funeral directors of Glenn Funeral Home. Mrs. Taylor had actively supported her community though organizations such as The Pilot Club, of which she had been a member for over 50 years and had served as president, The Cotillion Club, a sustaining member of The Junior League of Owensboro, "The Committee", Chair of the Wendell Foster Center Bazaar, active member and former president of the Franklin School PTA, the Saturday Musicale, the Women's Guild, Daughters of the American Revolution – General Evan Shelby Chapter, the board of directors of the Elizabeth Mundy Center, and Kentucky Wesleyan College, which she served as Trustee and Trustee Emeritus and where she had been chapter advisor of Alpha Omicron PI sorority. She was the second recipient of the Elizabeth Mundy Award for outstanding service to seniors. The international service sorority Beta Sigma Phi named her Owensboro First Lady of the Year, an award extended to non-members for outstanding service to their communities. Lucy Taylor quietly extended a hand of help to the people of her community and beyond.
She is survived by her sons, Glenn P. Taylor and his wife Camilla, and David P. Taylor and his wife Marilyn, all of Owensboro, her foster son, Richard Stringer and his wife Kazco of Tokyo; her grandchildren, Christy Taylor Chaney and her husband Travis, Glenn P. Taylor, Jr. and his wife Rachael, Katherine Taylor, and William "Will" Beckley Taylor; and her great-grandchildren; Ryland Chaney, Lucy Jagoe Chaney, and Addison Katherine Taylor, all of Owensboro.
Her funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Glenn Sowards and the Rev. Todd Love, will be at Noon on Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. on Friday. Entombment will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Memorial Fund of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church
