Louis William Hawes, 81, of 223 Abbie Ave., Owensboro, passed away on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born in Claude, Texas to the late Sam W. & Laura Cobb Hawes. He was a retired electrician with and member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #1701. He attended the Hawesway Christian Chapel and loved to hunt and fish, vegetable garden and raise cattle. He was such a kind and generous person that he would give anybody the shirt off his back. Carl, his brother, who Louis trusted and loved very much, stated that his brother was a Real Warrior to him. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696, and the National Rifle Assoc. He entered the Army when he was 18 and went into battle almost immediately, He was a Staff Sergeant in Company K, 3rd Army Battalion of the 317th Infantry Regiment having served under General George Patton. He was a rifleman and was on the front lines under combat conditions for 9 months. His company was reduced to 12 men including officers due to casualties during the Battle of the Bulge. He made scout missions working ahead of lines securing information about the enemy. He participated in 4 major campaigns while serving in the European Theater of Operations. He was taken from the battlefield twice for injuries sustained and was once considered missing in action and presumed dead for 21 days. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Sammy G. Hawes on Oct. 22, 1982.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, Margaret Green Hawes, a daughter and her husband, Dixie Hawes & Charles G. Falk, Jr. of Bowling Green, Ky., two grandsons, Charles Grady Chip Falk, III and his wife Tracey of Estill Springs, Tn., and William Louis Falk, U. S. Air Force stationed at Kadena A. F. Base in Okinawa, Japan, 6 great grandchildren, a brother, Carl W. and wife Clara Hawes of Owensboro, and three sisters, Elizabeth Anderson of Mooresville, In., Pauline Moreland of Owensboro, and Marcella and husband Bob Bell of Bradenton, Fla.
Services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, January 26 at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens with military honors presented by the V. F. W. Post #696 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Thursday and after 11:00 A.M. Friday at the funeral home.
