Lexie Daugherty Hicks

Lexie Daugherty Hicks, 74, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, June 11, 2009 at the Owensboro Medical Health System. Born February 12, 1935 in Mercer County, KY, she was the daughter of the late Ray Daugherty and A.B. and Gladys Worley Coyle. She was a licensed Clinical Marriage and Family therapist operating her own practice"Lexie Hicks Counseling"; and was of the Baptist faith. She studied voice and piano at Centre College. After completing three years of a bachelor's degree in nursing at Vanderbilt University, she graduated from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a minor in psychology and sociology. She received a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Psychology from Vanderbilt, her master's degree from Western Kentucky in Adult Human Development and Gerontology, and continued her doctoral study at Spaulding University. Mrs. Hicks' professional certifications included being a Diplomat of the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists, as well as certification in the disciplines of Reality Therapy, Mediation, and Mental Health for Red Cross Disaster and Critical Incident Stress Management. She served seven terms on the Kentucky Board for Marriage and Family Therapists; had earned Kentucky State recognition for sexual abuse and domestic violence advocacy; and was an adjunct faculty member at Western Kentucky University Graduate School. In addition to her private practice her careers included being a mother and homemaker, an elementary school teacher in Chafee, AK, a private piano teacher, and director and primary therapist for Rape Victims Services for Western Kentucky.

Mrs. Hicks' activities included service on the boards of directors of the Kentucky Association for Marriage and Family Therapists for seven terms, the executive board of the Barren River Regional HIV/AIDS Consortium, participation in numerous mental health and mediation organizations, the Daviess County Medical Auxiliary which nominated her as volunteer of the year, the board of directors of WNIN Channel 9 in Evansville, the Mayor's Committee on Beautification, the Chamber of Commerce All American City Award Committee, the Greentree Landscape Committee, the designer of the prayer garden and fountains of First Baptist Church, chair of the Dogwood and Azalea Trail, co-chair of Owensboro City Beautification Committee, president of the Fleur De Lys Garden Club, the Owensboro City Council of Garden Clubs, the Sutton School P.T.A., and the Owensboro City P.T.A. A member of the Cotillion Club and the then Junior Service League, she was the first chair and organizer of what has become the Junior League of Owensboro Rummage Sale. She served as board vice-chair of the Owensboro Area Science Museum, was a free lance interior designer, a tutor at the Wendell Foster Center, a member of the Kentucky Council of Garden Clubs, a former board member of the YWCA, and lecturer for colleges and workshops. Her memberships included the Owensboro Country Club, Alpha Omicron Pi sorority at Vanderbilt University, the Petroleum Club and the Jefferson Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Hicks. Surviving are her daughters, Ginger Greene of Owensboro and Dee Dee Yeagle of Bowling Green; a granddaughter, Ashley Wyatt of Owensboro; and cousins, Barbara (Lloyd) Brummett of Perryville, KY, Sam ( Mary Carol) Worley of Lexington, Martha (Jack) Gray of Lebanon, KY, and Mary Morgan of Perryville. She was particularly appreciative of the support provided by her cousin Barbara and the team on Transitional Care at Owensboro Medical Health System.

Services are 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Glenn Funeral Home with Rev. Chris Brummett officiating followed by entombment at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday and after 12 noon on Saturday at the funeral home.
