Lester Gore Simmons

September 16, 1915 — August 3, 2002

Lester Gore Simmons, 86, of 2532 Windsor Ave., Owensboro, died Saturday, August 3, 2002 at his home. The Old Vernon, IN, native retired from the Green Coal Company where he was an Operating Engineer for 421/2 years. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, taught in the CCC Camps prior to World War II teaching heavy equipment operations where he built an airport to guard the Great Lakes during WW II and helped build the Owensboro Daviess County Airport.

He is survived by hsi wife of 59 years, Vergie Reed Simmons; a son, James Lester Simmons of St. Petersburg. FL; two daughters, Kathryn Walls of Rocklin, CA and Elaine Fulton of Owensboro; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services are 2:30 P.M. Monday, August 5, 2002 at the Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Friends may call at the Glenn Funeral Home from 2-5 P.M. on Sunday, August 4 and after 1 P.M. on Monday, August 5, 2002.
