Leona Owen Curry, 84, of 21-B Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro, was welcomed into the arms of our Lord on Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Leona was born May 2, 1924 in Daviess County to the late Rollie and Sue Owen. She was a member of Wesleyan Heights Methodist Church for more than 40 years. She graduated from Livermore High School in 1942. In 1992 she graduated and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Brescia University where she worked for over 20 years. Leona's passion was fulfilled when she became a China Painter and had belonged to three China Painting Guilds. She was past President of the Evansville River Belles Porcelain Artist Guild, of Evansville, IN, President of Splash of Color Guild in Newburg, IN and a member of the World Organization of China Painters for 5 years. Some of Leona's china pieces were selected and placed at the Governor's Mansion in Indianapolis, IN as well as in the Museum of China Art in Oklahoma City, OK. Leona has been china painting more than 35 years. She has received numerous awards and recognition throughout the nation for her painting. She loved to travel with friends and enjoyed the Arts, Classical Music, the Owensboro Symphony and the River Park Broadway Plays. Leona was an avid supporter of such charitable organizations as Boys Town, John Hopkins Mayo Clinic Research for Alzheimer's, the Owensboro Research for Alzheimer's, Cancer Research and the American Disabled Veterans Association.
Leona was preceded into heaven by her husband of 49 years, Raymond (Curly) Curry, February 5, 1997, a son, Michael Wayne Curry November 5, 1995, two sisters, Martha Sue Owen and Betty Jo Owen, and a brother, Adrian Howard Owen.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald (Jerry) Owen Curry and his wife, Nancy of Caldwell, Idaho, Stephen L. Curry and his wife, Kaye of Owensboro; two grandchildren, Ryan Curry, Matt Curry and his wife, Katie of Owensboro; two brothers, William Rexford Owen and his wife, Georgia of Santa Fe, TX, Mark Owen and his wife, Mary of Owensboro. She also leaves behind several nieces, nephews, cousins and many dearly loved friends.
Visitation with the family will take place on Friday, March 20, 2009, from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Glenn Funeral Home, with a celebration of her life service to take place Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take place in the form of donations to Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church or Brescia University.
