Leamon C. Smith

Leamon C. Smith, 89, of Utica passed away Friday, May 20, 2011 at his home in the Maxwell Community. Born in Centertown, KY on October 11, 1921, he was the son of the late Lee and Greek Akin Smith; was a life-long farmer; and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon. Mr. Smith had also worked as an assistant mail carrier and worked at Kentuckiana Livestock. An Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded the Purple Heart for service in the European Theater of Operations and was a charter member of the Owensboro Chapter of the Order of the Purple Heart. He loved his home and farm and was known for his good gardening and was proud to say that he was a life-long Democrat. He was also instrumental in establishing the perpetual care fund for New Bethel Cemetery and was a Kentucky Colonel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Golda Mae Smith and brothers-in-law, Carl Hayden and George Thompson.


Surviving is his wife of 63 years, Martha Thompson Smith; a brother, Darrell (Jo Anne) Smith of Owensboro; a sister, Hettie Belle (Ed) Sanders of Owensboro and Margaret Hayden of Beech Grove; brothers-in-law, Joe Thompson of Hanson and Lawrence Thompson of Owensboro; a sister-in-law, Joan Thompson of Owensboro; and 49 nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Services are 12 noon Monday in the Chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Craig Bratcher and Rev. Hank Ricketson officiating followed by burial in Rosehill Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Ft Campbell Honor Guard and VFW Post 696. Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday and after 10 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky or the New Bethel Cemetery Fund.
