Lawrence (Sarge) McCubbins – July 01, 1940 – October 21, 2024
Lawrence (Sarge) McCubbins 84, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2024 while under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. Lawrence was born July 1, 1940 in Louisville to the late James and Catherine Tucker McCubbins. He lost his father at the age of two due to a construction accident. Catherine remarried to Tom Scharelikie who became the father for him and his siblings.
Lawrence served his country with a distinguished 20 plus year career in the US Air Force as an Aerospace Control and Warning System Technician. He received many medals and commendations during his service. After retiring from the Air Force, he worked for CSX Railroad where he retired as an Engineer. Lawrence lost his partner in life and wife of 39 years, Claudia Ruth McCubbins, to cancer at the young age of 57. They lived the military life, moving every couple of years to locations around the world. Upon retirement from the Air Force, they settled in Owensboro.
Lawrence then met and married Pauline (Polly) Warren blending the two families together. Larry and Polly were both adventurous and had a passion for travel. For 15 plus years that is exactly what they did. Soon after retirement they had a goal of playing golf in all 50 states which they accomplished in a little over a year. Lawrence and Polly then took on traveling the world. If they weren't away somewhere, they were planning their next adventure or returning from the last one. Lawrence enjoyed sharing his adventures with others.
Lawrence was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He had many one-liners that would always make you laugh. He would especially light up when he was around his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His favorite hobbies, aside from travel, were playing golf and cards.
Lawrence was also preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Harris, James Daniel McCubbins, Raymond McCubbins, and Patrick McCubbins, and a grandson, Joseph Thomas House; and Polly’s son, David Hinchcliffe and her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hinchcliffe.
Surviving is his wife of 22 years, Pauline Warren “Polly” McCubbins; his daughter, Tracy Lynn House (David) of Maceo and his son, Lawrence Thomas McCubbins (Becky) of Philpot; three grandchildren, Angelia McBride, Kristen Bumm (Ryan), and Morgan Cecil (Dylon), all of Owensboro; and two great grandchildren, Griffin and Lincoln Bumm.
Also surviving are Polly’s family, two sons, Phil Hinchcliffe (Shari) and grandchildren, Brooke, Erika, Natalie, and Chloe Hinchcliffe; Paul Hinchcliffe and grandchildren, Savanna Hinchcliffe and Taylor Davis; a daughter, Laurie Elliott (Mark) and grandchildren, Megan Mayfield (Casey) and Taylor Elliott (Katie Van Dyke) and great grandchildren, Maggie and Tucker Mayfield, grandson Alex Weiss (David’s son).
Funeral services for Lawrence will be 4 PM Thursday, October 24, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. A graveside committal service with full military honors will be 1 PM Monday, October 28 at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from Noon until the time of the service on Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
