Kenneth Paul "Pop" Ebelhar

August 24, 1927 — April 27, 2018

Kenneth Paul "Pop" Ebelhar ,90, died April 27,2018 at home in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky.
Born at home on Old Lyddane Bridge Road, August 24,1927, Kenneth was the fifth of seven children born to the late Peter J. and Clara Weber Ebelhar.
He attended the old Rogers one room school for four years. He then attended Sorgho School the first year it opened. When the family moved to French Island Road in January 1938, he attended St. Mary Magdalene School thru the 8th grade. He graduated St. Joseph High School in 1945.
In 1945 after graduating high school Kenneth was drafted into the Army and was sent to Fort McClennan. In 1946 he was sent to Yokohama, Japan to help in the cleanup of Occupied Japan.
When he returned home he met Stansell, his forever love and married in 1948. When Kenneth married, his parents retired and moved to Owensboro. He remained in the farm house for over 80 years. Kenneth and Stansell had six children. He lived his life simply and honestly. He always believed in working hard and doing the right thing. This he instilled in his children.
Kenneth was a member of the Knights of Columbus #6101 as a 4th Degree Knight. He was a charter member of the council, being one of the first 18 members. He was the treasurer of the council for 25 years. In 2004, Kenneth and Stansell received the Family of the Year Award for the Knights of Columbus in the state of Kentucky for his contribution to support family, church and community. He also helped the council get the sausage making event started.
He was a member of St. Mary Magdalene Parish for over 80 years. He was on the school board, parish council and picnic committee during those years. He headed up the mutton cooking team at the church picnic for over 50 years and participated in the top winning team of the Barbeque Festival for 18 years.

In 2001 Kenneth and Stansell won the Sophie Award for the Diocese of Owensboro. As a couple, they traveled a lot and visited all 50 states.
In 2005 Kenneth traveled with 21 youth and Fr. Richard Powers to Poland and Germany for the World Youth Day with an audience with the Pope. Everyone called him "Pop" as they strived to keep up with him on the journey.
When he wasn't farming he raised a big garden. He loved to watch things grow and then harvest the bounty of his labors. He loved UK Basketball and was a big NASCAR fan. He was able to attend many of those races on Men's Club bus trips.
Kenneth was always seen riding around with his faithful canine companion Chewy at his side. He and Chewy shared everything, including meals when Kenneth would feed him the same food from his own fork.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his wife, Stansell of 64 years; his brothers,
Vincent, Maurice, and Dennis; his sisters, Margaret Reisz and Lorena Stephen, his
granddaughter, Heather Lynn Ebelhar and great granddaughter Hayden Elizabeth
Keller.
