Kenneth Gary "Jake" Helwig, 87, of Owensboro, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 19, 2011 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was a member of Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church. Kenneth was a Marine, serving in the South Pacific in WWII. He retired in 1977 from Dixie Pavers in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He was also a professional baseball player from 1946 to 1949. He was in the Kitty League, playing for four teams, the last being Hopkinsville in 1947. His loving wife of 59 years, Josephine Renfrow Helwig preceded him in death on December 7, 2010. He was also preceded in death by two sisters.
Surviving are his children; Becky (Alan) Englehart, Bill (Sally) Helwig, Vicki (Mark) Marshall and Glenn (Tina) Helwig, grandchildren; Lee Hall, Will (Rose) Helwig, Amy (Dale) Crabtree, Adam (Marianna) Marshall, Kelly "Warrior" Englehart, Jacob Helwig, and eight great-grandchildren all of Owensboro, and Andy Englehart of Georgetown, Indiana.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Rev. Pete Coble officiating. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. and after 12 p.m. Thursday. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice of Western Kentucky or to Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church.
