Katherine Potter Payne Brand, 100, of Owensboro, passed away Jan. 27, 2025, at the Carmel Home. She was born Dec. 17, 1924, in Daviess County to the late Roy E. and Gertrude Mattingly Potter. Katherine was a member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. She faithfully served in various ministries and was a Eucharistic Minister. Katherine was an excellent seamstress and used her love for creating a masterpiece by collecting dolls and making clothes for them. She would donate the dolls to the Oasis Shelter in Owensboro for the many children that had never been able to have their own. Katherine also made thousands of dresses for young Haitian girls in need and over her century of life, made over one hundred handmade quilts.
Retiring from the American Cigar Factory, Katherine continued to serve people by becoming a C.N.A. and working at Hermitage Manor Nursing Home before a second retirement. She loved to garden, but thought squirrels were out to ruin the flowers she had carefully nurtured. She also canned and made the best cornbread. Katherine was preceded in death by her first husband, James Clayton Payne, Sr., second husband, Joseph Eugene Brand Sr., children, James Clayton Payne Jr., Michael Wayne Payne Sr., Charles “Tony” Payne; siblings, Virginia Gentry, Dorothy Duncan, Gertrude Dockery, Eliose Grant, Ruth Potter, and an infant brother.
She is survived by her children, Cecilia Katherine Payne, David Larry Payne Sr., Sheila Ann (Steve) Byrne, Patricia Gayle (Jimmy) Vowels, Rebecca Lynn (Scott) Hester; twenty grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, twenty-five great-great grandchildren; sister, Esther Skiles; step-children, Thomas Brand, Joseph Brand Jr., Timothy Brand, Chris Brand, Phillip Brand, and Jeannine Poehlein, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Friday at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, with prayers at 5 p.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, and Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
Pallbearers assisting will be grandsons, Johnny Tindall, Jason Tindall, David Payne Jr., Mike Payne Jr., David Hester, and Jimmy Hester.
