Karl D. Gilbert

Karl D. Gilbert, Jr., 85 of Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center. He was born in April of 1924 in LaGrange, IN to the late Karl D. and Mildred Gilhams Gilbert, Sr. He was retired after 37 years as an accountant with Texas Gas Transmission and had been a member of Third Baptist Church for 52 years. Karl was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II having fought in the Battle of the Bulge in the European Theater. Before going in to the service, he worked at the Goodyear Aircraft Co. in Akron, OH assembling stabilizers on the fighter planes. He loved different types of sports and especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren's games. He sang in the church choir and for more than 50 years sang, in the Owensboro Messiah every December, and performed in a Barber Shop quartet. He lead a jail ministry for about 30 years at the Detention Center. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret G. Cole on November 5, 2007 and a granddaughter, Jennifer N. Goodhue on July 14, 2004, and two brothers, James C. Gilbert and Charles C. Gilbert.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Letitia Roberts Gilbert; his son Stephen K. Gilbert and wife Sally of Centennial, CO; three grandchildren, Lee K. Gilbert of Breckenridge, CO; Timothy S. Gilbert and wife Kate of Owensboro, and Caitlin Goodhue of Louisville, CO, and a great granddaughter Kya N. Goodhue of Louisville, CO., and a son-in-law, Steve Cole of Louisville, Ky.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 17 at the Third Baptist Church with burial following in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be at Glenn Funeral Home from 2:00-6:00 P.M. Sunday and after 10:00 A.M. Monday at the church.
