J.T. Bates

J.T. Bates, 86, of Owensboro, died January 13, 2014 at his home. He was born April 9, 1927 in McLean County to the late Aaron and Tena Harrison Bates. J.T. graduated from Sacramento High School in 1944 and was a Navy veteran. He was a retired construction supervisor. J.T. was of the Methodist faith and attended St. John's United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Sacramento Masonic Lodge. J.T. will always be remembered for his unending love and devotion to his family. He was an honest, kind hearted, and very personable man who was a very knowledgeable sports enthusiast especially in baseball, basketball, and golf. J.T. also enjoyed fishing and playing golf.

He also was preceded in death by his sisters, Frances Bowman, Cassie Hardison and Minnie Hancock; and a brother, Arthur Bates.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Wanda Frailley Bates of Owensboro; sons, Dennis (Debra) Bates of Owensboro, and Daryl (Jackie) Bates of Sacramento; grandchildren, Mark (Micky) Bates of Shelbyville, Trent (Heather) Bates and Kerri (Chad) Holder all of Louisville, Chris (Allison) Bates of Owensboro, Shane (Molly) Bates of Sacramento, Emily (Randy) Strobo of Louisville, and Whitney (Shane) Williams of Nashville, TN; 15 great grandchildren; and a brother in law, J.D. Hardison.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 pm on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Glenn Funeral Home & Crematory. In observance of Mr. Bates wishes, no service will be held.

Expressions of sympathy may also take the form of donations to either The American Heart Association or The American Diabetes Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
