Joyce Heltsley Johnson

March 19, 1922 — December 6, 2010

Joyce Heltsley Johnson, 88, of Windsor Avenue, Owensboro, died Monday, December 6, 2010 at Owensboro Medical Health System. She was born in Muhlenberg County to the late George and Edna Heltsley. Joyce was a longtime member of Drakesboro Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, and was a teacher at Drakesboro Elementary School before retiring and moving to Owensboro. She loved to vacation in the Smoky Mountains, work crossword puzzles and read. She was a member of the Muhlenberg Homemakers, and she was a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Thurman in 1994, as well as a brother, Louis Heltsley and a son-in-law, George Bender Jr.
Surviving is a son, Enos (Cathy) Johnson, and a daughter Angela Bender , both of Owensboro. grandchildren, Andrea (Matt) Husk, Katie Wink, Cody Bender, Lindsey Johnson, Joey (Kimi) Powers, Amber Johnson, two sisters, Merle (Jr.) Nannie, of South Carrolton, Norma Jean Drake of Bremen, a brother George (Phyllis) Heltsley of Whitesville, and a sister-in-law Jean Heltsley of Bremen, and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m.Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Drakesboro Baptist Church. Burial will be in Gant Cemetery in Sharon Grove, Ky. Visitation in Owensboro will be Tuesday, December 7, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation Wednesday will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Drakesboro Baptist Church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association.
