Joyce Griffin Baxter

Joyce Griffin Baxter, 91, previously of Owensboro, passed away Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Atria Assisted Living in Elizabethtown, KY. Mrs. Baxter was born June 9, 1926 in Mayfield, KY to the late Orvis and Ruth Nichols Griffin. She attended Murray State University and earned her Associates Degree from Nashville College of Health Sciences. Joyce then worked as a lab-tech at the Doctor's Laboratory and retired after 39 years of service. She was a very active community volunteer for the RiverPark Center, Mary Kendall Home, The Help Office, and an involved member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church for over 45 years, serving in many leadership and volunteer positions.

Joyce was also preceded in death by her husband, George Luther Baxter Sr.; brothers, William and Floyd Griffin; and a sister, Anita Perry.

She is survived by her daughters, Ruth H. Baxter and her husband, James Crawford, of Carrollton, KY; Beth Mather and her husband, Ron, of Elizabethtown, KY; a son, George L. "Chip" Baxter Jr. and his wife, Dee, of Carmel, IN; grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Mather (Matt Hamby), Rev. Sarah Elaine Mather (Jennifer Friedel), Griffin Madison Mather, George Luther Baxter III, Brooke Quinn Baxter, and William Maximus Baxter.

A funeral service will be 11 am CST Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Kaury Edwards and Rev. Sarah Elaine Mather officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 am until 11 am Saturday at the church. A graveside committal will be 3:30 pm CST, the same day, at Highland Park Cemetery in Mayfield, KY with Rev. Sarah Elaine Mather officiating. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.

The family has requested that memorial contributions and gifts take the form of donations to Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church Women's Mission Circle, 1215 Scherm Road Owensboro, KY 42301, or Alzheimer's Association in care of Atria Assisted Living, 133 Heartland Drive Elizabethtown, KY 42701.
