Josephine Renfrow Helwig, 85, of Owensboro, passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at her home. Born in Butler County, a daughter of the late William Ethel Renfrow and Rebecca Ann Justice Renfrow, she retired from Sears following more than 23 years of employment. Mrs. Helwig was a member of Breckenridge Street United Methodist Church, its New Life Sunday school class and where she was devoted to caring for and coordinating the acolytes. She was an avid quilter, an interest she used to the benefit of others, having over the years made more than 250 quilts for the Mary Kendall Home, assuring that every girl had a quilt on their bed. She was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters.
Mrs. Helwig is survived by her husband of 59 years, Kenneth G. Helwig; her children, Becky Englehart and her husband Alan, Bill Helwig and his wife Sally, Vicki Marshall and her husband Mark, and Glenn Helwig and his wife Tina, all of Owensboro; her grandchildren, Lee Hall, Will Helwig and his wife Rose, Amy Crabtree and her husband Dale, Adam Marshall and his wife Marianna, Kelly Englehart, and Jacob Helwig, all of Owensboro, and Andy Englehart of Louisville; and 8 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service for Mrs. Helwig will be at 12:00 noon Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday and after 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Hospice of Western Kentucky.
