Joseph Wayne Winfield, 78, passed away the night of December 23rd, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 13, 1947, in Owensboro, to the late James Thomas and Mary Blanche Winfield.
Wayne spent his childhood and younger years growing up in Saint Joseph, Kentucky, on his family’s farm.
A few of his most memorable accomplishments were that he was a Kentucky Colonel and committed 32 years of his life to the Daviess County Public Schools System as a heating and air electrician before enjoying his retirement.
While the public knew him as Wayne, his family called him "Poppy." He was involved in any and everything to do with grandchildren. They were in fact his whole world. Wayne was also an avid Kentucky Basketball fan where he enjoyed cheering on the CATS from his favorite spot on the couch. Lastly, Wayne loved to hunt and fish with his friends and family.
Wayne will be remembered for his hard work, his love for family, and the boundless devotion he gave to his children and grandchildren. His legacy will live on in all who knew him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his brothers, Donnie Winfield and Gary "Fizz" Winfield; his brother-in-law, Eddie Payne; and his mother-in-law, Betty McGrew.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 56 years, Linda Winfield; children, Rachelle Polston (Terry) and Craig Winfield (Teela); sisters, Carolyn Payne (Eddie), Patricia Simpson, and Diane Galloway; brothers, Jeff Winfield (Darlene) and Marty Winfield (Robin); sister-in-law, Kay Winfield; grandchildren, Mallorie Murrill (Mitchell), Ty Winfield (Shelby), Maddie Polston (Elliott), and Logen Winfield; great-grandchildren, his little buddy, Hayden Mitchell, and two more tiny blessings on the way; as well as a large and loving crew of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Monday, December 29, at Precious Blood Catholic Church from 9:00am until 1:00pm, with Mass beginning at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at St. Alphonsus.
