Joseph W. Vickers, 78, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, October 28, 2010 at his home. Born in Muhlenberg County on November 27, 1931, he was the son of the late Gilbert and Zular Greathouse Vickers; had worked as a coal loader; and was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a 41 year member of the American Legion. Mr. Vickers was a very independent, caring person who was always willing to help others. He enjoyed working in his yard, working on cars, and sitting in his new carport at home drinking coffee and listening to the radio. He was devoted to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jonell Daugherty; a grandson, Robert Dale Yonts; a brother, Donald Vickers; and a sister, Dean Moore.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Nellie Cheshire Vickers; children, Richard (Lori) Vickers of Waynesburg, KY, Michael (Janet) Vickers of Owensboro, Charlie (Debra) Vickers of Whitesville, and Nora (Rob) Sprankle of Owensboro; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Joyce Pinkston and Betty Burns of Owensboro.
Prayer service will be 3 p.m. Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with John Docimo officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home after 11 a.m. on Saturday. Private burial will be in Nickel Ridge Cemetery.
