Joseph Hugh Spalding, 86, of Owensboro died Friday, January 17, 2003, at Owensboro Mercy Health Systems in Owensboro. The Daviess County native was of the Catholic Faith he retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service and retired from Woodward Governor in Love Park, Ill. after 10 years. He was an E-6 rank when he was discharged (Petty Officer First Class). He was a member of the Navy Club in Rockford, Ill., American Legion Post 9, Fleet Reserve Association, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4, Society of the 40 + 8, a life member of American Veterans Post 75 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 696. He was a veteran of W.W.II and the Korean Conflict he was aboard the U.SS New Orleans and was one of only two remaining Daviess County natives who were survivors of Pearl Harbor. He had held the following positions Senior Vice Commander of the American Legion, Deputy Vice Commander of the Area A of the American Legion and Second District Commander of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Alberta Allen Spalding; a daughter, Norma Spalding Moldenhauer of Golden Valley, Arizona; a brother, Leonard Spalding of Owensboro; a brother-in-law, Homer Allen of Frankfort; 3 grandchildren, Tammy Reed, Jeff Higdon and Michael Higdon all of Portland, Oregon; 1 great-grandchild, Heather Reed of Portland, Oregon; and seven nieces and six nephews.
Services are at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday and after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
