Joseph C. Riney (Joe), 91, of Owensboro, passed away on September 08, 2015 at Carmel Home.
Born on April 05, 1924, he was the son of the late William Gerald and Mary Merimee Riney. He was a 1942 graduate of Vine Grove High School.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Sue Thomas Riney; an infant son, Eugene Aloysius Riney; brothers, Gerald Riney and Marnell Riney and one sister, Patricia Riney Betts
He was a dedicated husband and father who valued faith, family, country and community. He retired in 1990, after 43 years as Farm Manager of Mount Saint Joseph farms. As a veteran of WWII, he was Sgt. Major in the 12th Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division of the US Army. He served in both the Philippine Islands and in Japan. At age 80, he fulfilled a life-long dream of returning to Japan for a visit. He was very community and civic-minded, serving many years on the Daviess County Democratic Executive Committee, advancing to Chairman. As a longtime member of the West Daviess County Water Board, he was instrumental in the planning and implementation of our current water system in Daviess County. He was also an active member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Lion's Club and Knights of Columbus. Joe and his wife, Sue, provided many hours of skating and square-dancing for children and adults in the community as owners and operators of West Louisville Skating Rink from 1949 until 1962. Mr. Riney was devoted to his faith and a member of The Immaculate parish.
Survivors include children: Mary Jo Kirby (Don) of Louisville, Ed Riney (Mary) of Owensboro, Rev. Jerry Riney of Owensboro, Janet Murphy (Jim) of Owensboro, Bob Riney (Nancy) of Dallas, TX., Jane Gaffey (Tom) of Denver, CO., Maria Thompson (Chip) of Owensboro, and Ann Carver (Reg) of Atlanta, GA.; grandchildren: Donald Kirby, II (Martha), David Kirby (Tricia), Tom Riney (Karen), Dr. Chris Riney, Jennifer Murphy Byrne (Sean), Julie Murphy Ferguson, Jamie Murphy (Nicole), Jerrod Murphy (Tricia), Jacob Murphy, Allison Riney, Natalie Gaffey Steadman (Mick), Lauren Gaffey Moore (Sean), Melissa Gaffey, Emily Thompson Best (Kyle), Luke Thompson (Emily), Alex Thompson, Caroline Carver, Chloe Carver; 26 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mary Catherine Riney Pfister.
The funeral Mass will be at 11:00 on Saturday at The Immaculate Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 3 until 7 p.m. Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, with prayers at 7 p.m., and from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at The Immaculate Catholic Church. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Cemetery.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Immaculate Parish or St. Vincent DePaul.
