Joseph G. "Buck" Payne, 92, of Owensboro passed away Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Twin Rivers Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Rome, Kentucky to the late Sam and Mary Belle Payne.
Buck was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II and a former, longtime member of the VFW Post #696.
He retired from Owensboro Grain after nearly thirty years of service. Buck was a longtime member of Saints Joe and Paul Catholic Church. He enjoyed camping, U.K. Basketball, gardening, outdoor cooking and NASCAR.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Wilma Reed Payne in 2010; a son, Gerald Lee Payne in 2006; sisters, Mae Coomes, Mary Catherine Payne, Bernadine Slaton and Lear White; and a brother, James Payne.
Buck is survived by a daughter, Sandra (Bobby) Quinn of Owensboro; a son, Richard (Martha) Payne of Owensboro; a daughter-in-law, Jewell Payne of Owensboro; grandchildren, Sherri (Davey) Walden, Stephanie (Greg) Lane, Stacy Johnson, Scott (Kim) Quinn, Pat (Michelle) Payne, and David (Kara) Payne; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Cecilia Patton and Clara Patton, both of Owensboro; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass will be held at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, December 31 at Saints Joseph and Paul Catholic Church with Father Carl McCarthy officiating. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-8 PM on Monday and after 11 AM on Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory where prayers will be said at 7 PM on Monday.
