Joseph “Mike” Kimbley

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Mike on Saturday July 25, 2026 at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital following complications from a fall at his home. Born in Owensboro on June 9, 1944, Mike was a beloved son of his cherished parents, William and Betty Lois Kelley and Winford Kimbley. He was also preceded in death by a younger brother Carl Kimbley.

A proud alumnus of Owensboro Catholic High School, Mike served honorably in the United States Air Force from 1962 until 1966 during the Vietnam Era. He was stationed at Pease AFB in New Hampshire. Upon returning to Owensboro, he pursued pre-law studies at Brescia College, showcasing his determination by working various jobs to fund his education. He later attended law school at the University of Kentucky, marking the beginning of a distinguished legal career.

Mike was a longstanding member of the Logan County Bar Association since 1973, having begun his career as a law clerk for William G. Fuqua in 1972. His dedication to justice was evident during his tenure as Logan County Public Defender from 1973 until 1978. He served as Logan County Trial Commissioner and represented numerous clients in the Kentucky Court of Appeals. Although he narrowly missed becoming District Judge for the 7th. Judicial District, his contributions to the legal community were profound.

Beyond his career, Mike was an active participant in community organizations, especially cherishing time at his Lake Malone home, where neighbors became family. A man of varied interests, Mike was an expert marksman in his youth, and his love evolved into gardening, koi pond tending, and canning fresh tomatoes. His adventurous spirit took him on travels to the Northeast, the West, and annually to the Gulf Coast of Mississippi, where he delighted in fresh seafood and classic car events.

Mike loved motorcycles, playing jeopardy, speed boat racing, pool, leisure boating, and following professional sports. He was an avid golfer, especially when he was playing with his brothers.

Mike’s quick wit and warm smile were hallmarks of his personality, always available to lighten up a room and listen with genuine compassion. His ability to understand and empathize made him a cherished confidant to many.

Mike’s journey was enriched by his devoted siblings, William Kelley, Jr. (Nuruk Kelley), Mary Susan Booth (Mike Booth), Daniel Levi Kelley, Patricia Anne Kelley, Charles Andrew Kelley (Maricar Kelley), and Glenn Ellis Kelley (Pamela Kelley). His legacy is further carried by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a vast network of friends who were like family to him.

A service to honor Mike’s remarkable life will be held at Noon on Wednesday, July 29, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory located at 900 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, KY 42303. Father Ray Clark will officiate and Mike’s nephew, Bill Bland, will be assisting. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors on Thursday at 1 PM. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Mike will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His family, particularly Bill and Locke, will forever cherish his annual visits south, laden with Kentucky rocks and the best homegrown tomatoes. His absence leaves a void, but his memory will be a guiding light for his extended family and friends.
