Joseph Richard McDaniel

Joseph Richard McDaniel, Jr., 74, of Owensboro passed away Thursday, January 19, 2012 at his home. Born in Owensboro on May 25, 1937, he was a lifelong resident of Owensboro. He was the son of the late Joseph Richard McDaniel, Sr., a deputy sheriff in the 1930's and Anna Lou Smith McDaniel both of whom were descendants of pioneer families of Daviess County. Richard was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Mr. McDaniel attended the Cathedral and Sts Joseph and Paul Elementary/Middle Schools; graduated from Owensboro Catholic High School in 1955; attended Brescia College for 3 years; and was a member of the Marines Corps Reserve for 8 years being honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of Corporal. He joined the Owensboro Police Department in July 1960 and served in all areas of responsibility until his resignation in 1978 with the rank of Major/Assistant Chief. He also served as a deputy jailer under Boots Norris, Harold Taylor and under Keith Cain as a deputy sheriff/bailiff/security officer at the Owensboro Daviess County Judicial Center. He was a 1969 graduate of the 83rd Session of the FBI Academy and taught numerous law enforcement subjects at local agencies as well as Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky Universities. He took great pride in assisting in the development of the curriculum and training programs for the Owensboro Police Department in the early 1960's and the same with the development of the initial law enforcement training program for the local agencies the were established by Robert Clark Stone at Eastern/Western Kentucky Universities in the mid 1960's. He held offices in local and state branches of the Fraternal Order of the Police, Kentucky Peace Officers Association and the Green River Regional Crime Council as well as being a Kentucky Colonel and Duke of Paducah. Other aspects of Mr. McDaniel's career included 8 years as the owner of a professional; furniture refinishers business in the Olde Forging Plant Building on West 2nd Street; 3 years as a Daviess County School bus driver; 3 years driving an 18 wheel truck, 5 years in security at Kimberly Clark; and is known for his skill in the art of chair caning. His favorite pastimes included reading, genealogy, and his family.

Surviving are his children, Derek McDaniel, Darren McDaniel and his wife Kathy, and Darby Fulkerson and her husband Terry all of Owensboro; a grandson, Zackary Fulkerson of Owensboro; a sister, Jackie Lou Dingess and her husband Ernest of Louisville; and a niece, Danielle Dingess of Louisville.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2012 in Resurrection Chapel, Resurrection Cemetery. Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
