Joseph Glenn "Joey" Fischer, 60, went barreling into the arms of Jesus and scooped up his first sweet granddaughter on Friday September 23, 2016 at 8:19 p.m.
Joey was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on March 21, 1956 to the late Bill and Margaret Fischer. He grew up in Daviess County and graduated from the local high school in 1974. He would tell you that in his younger days he loved fast cars and beautiful women. He would also tell you that he met the most beautiful one of them all on a cold Christmas Eve in 1977 when Sondra Boswell (Fischer) pulled into his gas station and began crying when her window fell off its' track. In what was possibly his only Prince Charming-like act (he would be sorely disappointed if we painted him into the romantic type), he fixed her window and demanded that she put her number on her check. He finally put that number to use and on October 18, 1980 he married his lovely bride. He spent the next 35.9 years driving her absolutely crazy, but loving her in the best way he knew how…with a kiss every night, plenty of headaches, and an occasional diamond to make up for it all. Together, he and Sondra went on to raise their 4 children: Joy Kaye Abel and husband Cory, Sara Beth Aud and husband Kyle, Joseph Michael Fischer, and Adam Ralph Fischer and wife Kaitlyn, all of Owensboro. He was incredibly proud of the adults that his babies turned into and he made sure to instill a strong work ethic, a fierce sense of pride, and a love for family into each of them.
One of Joey's favorite sayings was, "Well some people got to work for a livin'!" He said it multiple times daily, and boy did he mean it. He and his Daddy established Fischer's Keystop in 1978. With Joey's guidance and the hard work of his family, the Keystop quickly flourished into multiple family run businesses. One of his favorite things to do was to gripe at his faithful employees (typically his kids, nieces, or nephews) about how they ought to be at the gas pump and waiting on customers, no one could get the work done quite to his liking. And as busy as all of his endeavors kept him, there was nowhere that Joey was more himself than sitting behind his desk, telling big stories, and typically being inappropriate with his brothers and buddies.
Joey was a lot of things: he was a distinguished gas pumper, he was an incredible and self-made businessman, he prided himself on his ability to parallel park a semi, he was as ornery as the day is long, and he was the best husband, Daddy, Pappaw, brother, uncle, and friend to more people than we could possible count. His absence has already left such a void and he will continue to be greatly missed by those who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law and friend, Ralph Boswell, his granddaughter, Emelia Claire Aud, his grandparents, and several aunts and uncles, all people who he had greatly missed since the moment they each passed.
He is survived by his wife and children; his five living grandchildren, Minor Abel, Myles Abel, Fischer Abel, Ellington Aud, and Holden Aud; his mother-in-law Edna Boswell; his five siblings David Fischer and wife Barbara, Tommy Fischer, Jimmy Fischer and wife Kelly, Kathy Clark and husband Bob, and Karen Fischer-Kirk; his siblings-in-law Judy Boswell, Joel Boswell and wife Joyce, and Gerald Boswell and wife Linda; dozens of nieces and nephews who will miss their uncles mentorship and constant (and occasionally unsolicited) advise ; and several hundred friends from all walks of life.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, September 28 in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Brother Jerry Ford officiating. Burial will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 2:00-8:00 P.M. Tuesday and after 8:00 A.M. Wednesday at the funeral home.
