Joseph Hugh Cecil passed away peacefully at the Carmel Home on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the age of 99. He was born November 8, 1925 in Daviess County. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II stationed in Tokyo, Japan. Hugh was a lifelong member of Saint Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church. He retired from Medley’s Distillery in 1988 and Glenmore Distillery in 2002. He was an avid vegetable gardener and he and his wife Betty are well-known for their famous homemade V8 drink. Hugh was a member of Saint Vincent DePaul where they operated a satellite store out of the Saint Peters Church School. He and Betty have lived at the Carmel Home for the last five years and he believed it was the next step to heaven. Father Ray, all the Sisters and staff have truly been a blessing to him.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Charles and Georgia Cecil; a son David Leo Cecil; brothers and sisters, Marie Simmons, Bernard Cecil, Sister George Ann Cecil, Frankie Cecil, Leon Cecil, Paul Cecil, and Bobby Cecil.
Hugh is survived by his wife and best friend, Betty Igleheart Cecil. They were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1952 and enjoyed 72 years together, his eight children, Mark (Letha) Cecil, Craig (Karen) Cecil, Chuck (Donna) Cecil, Gail (Randall) Murphy, Peggy (Bobby) Jackson, Beth (Sammy) Hall, Clay (Peggy) Cecil, and Philip (Beth) Cecil; and a sister, Mildred Higdon.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Mandy Boswell, Natalie Payne, Emily Cecil, Cody Cecil, Katie Cecil, Jody Cecil, Aaron Cecil, Lori Grant, Ashley Huff, Jessica Murphy, Derek Murphy, Stephanie Dawson, Nikki Dukes, Holly Jackson, Casey Escobedo, Andy Hall, Samantha Bolton, Jonathan Hall, Kristen Goode, Magan Iglehart, Nathan Cecil, Nathan Taylor, and Shelby Baker; 37 great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren.
There will be visitation at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory on Sunday, June 1, from 3 PM until 6 PM with prayers being said at 6 PM. He will be at the Carmel Home for residents to view on Monday June 2 from 8:30 until 9:30 AM and then will be taken to Saint Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Stanley for visitation from 10 until 11 AM with the mass immediately following. Burial will be in Saint Peter Cemetery in Stanley.
