Joseph Cilia

Joseph Cilia, 94, of Owensboro, died on July 16, 2014 at Mater Dei Hospital in the country of Malta. He was born on September 28, 1919 in Rabat, Malta to the late Anthony and Paulina Borg Cilia.

Joseph was a Building Designer and Project Coordinator for the firm of Max. W. Bisson and Associates, Architects and the firm of E.A. Weill, Architect. He was also employed by the Owensboro Metropolitan Planning Commission as a Plan Reviewer and Building Inspector.

Joseph was an Army veteran of WWII. He served in the 4th and 20th Armored Divisions and took part in the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp in Germany. Joseph was a member of the Battle of Normandy Association, American Legion Post 09, V.F.W. Post 696, D.A.V. Chapter 04 and Owensboro Diocese Building Advisory Committee. He was a charter member of Immaculate Catholic Church and past member of the Emergency Management Agency's Structural Evaluation Team. Joseph was also a Kentucky Colonel and recipient of the Sophia Award in 2004.

He was is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mary Ruth McMahan Cilia; a daughter, Mary Joelene Cilia; a sister, Francis Porter; and two brothers, Michael and Antion Cilia.

Joseph is survived by a daughter, Paula Annin (Phillip); a son, George Anthony "Tony" Cilia (Kathy), both of Owensboro; a sister, Marija Tatlow of Baltimore, MD; two grandchildren, James Annin and Kelly Schroeder; four great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins in Malta and Australia.

The funeral mass will be at 10 AM on Monday, July 28 at Immaculate Catholic Church. Fr. Tony Jones will officiate and entombment will be at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 until 5 with prayers at 3 PM and on Monday after 9 AM at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
