Joseph Albert Jones

Joseph Albert Jones, 97, was born in Daviess County on November 20, 1928. His life of earth ended Thursday, January 15, 2026, and a new life began of spending eternity with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in whom he put all his faith and trust. He was a member of Third Baptist Church, loved gospel music, and believed only in Calvary’s cross and the shed blood of Jesus Christ. Joe graduated from Daviess County High School with the class of 1947 and was a member of the 1945 undefeated regular season basketball team. He met the love of his life, Betty Joyce Jones, on Easter Sunday, 1950 and they were married on October 6 of the same year at Hall Street Baptist Church.

While serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Joe was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, where he served with the 503rd Military Police Battalion and joined by his wife, they lived off post in Fayetteville, NC. In 1953, Joe began a 35-year career with Ashland Oil, working in the oil fields of Daviess and surrounding counties as well as Patoka, IL and Puerto Rico. He was licensed by the Coast Guard to load crude oil barges on the inland waterways of the U.S. and a permanent instructor’s certificate to conduct first aid classes issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. Although his work sometimes required him to be away from his family for days and weeks at a time, they were always on his mind. He loved them deeply and thought of them as a precious gift from God.

In addition to his parents, Chester Albert Jones and Mary Elenora Morris Jones, Joe was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-five years, Betty, in October of 2025; siblings, Arthur Lewis Jones, Mary Ellen Hale, and Martha Jane Wathen.

Those left to cherish his memory include son, Michael Joseph Jones; daughter, Shari Lynn (Tommy, Jr.) Tapp; granddaughters, Taylor Rae Tapp (Valentin) Preda, Sydney Lynn Tapp (Beau) Worth; great-grandchildren, Ellie Rain Girten, Nadia Rae Preda, Owen Ray Girten, Vera Lynn Preda, Liam Jones Girten, and Theo Tapp Gentry.
