Jones Madison Baber

Jones Madison Baber, 82, of Louisville, formerly of Owensboro, died Thursday, April 5, 2001 at his home. Born in Platt County, Missouri on October 26, 1918, he was a graduate of William Jewell College in Liberty, MO with a BA degree in Economics. He married the former Dorothy Lee Holmes in Owensboro, KY on March 15, 1941. She preceded him in death in 1995.

He was a veteran of W.W.II, having served in the Air Transport Command, and was a member of Owensboro Masonic Lodge #130, F&AM.

He had been president of Baber Automotive Supply for 15 years and served as the first president of the Kentucky Automotive Wholesalers Associates, and on its board of directors. He was named Deputy Director of Motor Vehicle Inspection in Kentucky under then Governor Ned Breathitt.

Mr. Baber retired in 1988 from Hilliard Lyons, where he had been Vice President of Sales in the Owensboro office for 16 years, until 1983, when he was named Senior Vice President and Manager for Training and Development in Louisville, KY. He was a graduate of the Securities Industry Institute of Wharton School in Philadelphia, PA, and served on the board of directors for that school.

Following his retirement in 1988, Mr. Baber enjoyed golf at Hurstbourne Country Club. He also published The Road to Creative Sales in 1993, and lectured to professional organizations.

Survivors include a son, James Bruce Baber of Franklin, TN, Dianne Holmes Baber Critchlow of Union City, TN., and Sharon Lynn Baber of Louisville, 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held 9:30 AM EDST Saturday at Hurstbourne Baptist Church in Louisville. Visitation will be from 2:30 until 3:30, CDST Saturday in Christ Chapel Mausoleum at Owensboro Memorial Gardens, followed by a service of committal at 3:30. Entombment will be in Christ Chapel Mausoleum. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the American Heart Association, Kentucky Affiliate, 318 St. Elizabeth Street, Owensboro, KY 42301 or to the Leukemia Society of America Kentucky Chapter 710 West Main Street, Louisville, KY 40202.
