Johnnie B. Phillips, 84, of Henderson, died Wednesday, September 14, 2016 at Methodist Hospital in Henderson. Mr. Phillips retired from Independence Bank and was previously employed with Citizens State Bank, Liberty national bank and South Central Bank in Owensboro and Peoples Bank in Madisonville. He was associated with financial institutions from 1955 until his retirement in 2001. He serviced in the United States Air Force for four years and then in the Air Force Reserve for seven years.
Mr. Phillips had served on the Board of Directors with each of the banks as well as Brescia University, Leadership Owensboro, Junior Achievement, Owensboro Council for Retarded Citizens, Chamber of Commerce, Owensboro Industry, Inc, Family Y, United Way, Jaycees. Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts, Kentuckiana Girl Scouts, Kentucky School of Banking, American Institute of Banking, Group II Kentucky Bankers Association, Downtown Owensboro, and was a member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church. He was a Kentucky Colonel and was appointed an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-De-Camp in the Alabama State Militia by Governor George C. Wallace.
While in Madisonville he served on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors as well as Economic Development, United Way, the Business Advisory Committee of the Madisonville Community College, was a member of the Noon Kiwanis Club and a Life Member of the VFW in Madisonville.
In Henderson he served as a director for the Chamber of Commerce, GRADD (Economic Development Committee), member of the Rotary Club, Leadership Henderson, Moose Lodge #732, American Legion, and was a member of Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mr. Phillips was also a member (and past Master) of the Owensboro Masonic Lodge #130, a 32nd degree Mason, Henderson Shrine Club Transportation Committee, Rizpah Shrine Temple and a member of the Royal Order of Jesters.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Delores Phillips in 1986; father, James Bevie Phillips; mother, Gussie Lindsey Phillips Ford; step-father, James Earl Ford; brothers, James Waylon Phillips and Dalton Lewis Phillips; and half-brother, Kenneth Lewis Wright, Sr.
Survivors include his wife, Nina Delois (Viney) Phillips; daughters, Karen Phillips and Delores Ashby (Toya) both of Owensboro; son, John Brent Philips (LeAnn) of Memphis, TN; step-daughter, Sharon Brown Palmatier (Robert) of Orange Park, FL; grandchildren, Elizabeth Hedgspeth (Ben), Laura Linn (Scott), Lindsey Gibson, Kara Spencer (Brad), Taylor Phillips, Johnie B. Phillips, Jake Phillips and Caleb Palmatier (Suyuri); six great-grandsons, two great-granddaughters and six step-great-grandchildren; sister, Jewell Spainhoward; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 3 pm until 7 pm Friday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory in Owensboro. Services will be at 2 pm Saturday at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home in Henderson where visitation will begin at 10 am. Burial will be in Roselawn Cemetery in Henderson, KY.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to the Shriner's Hospital, Brescia University or Bennett Memorial United Methodist Church.
