John Anthony "Poochie" Winstead

December 1, 1951 — April 8, 2019

John Anthony Winstead, Sr., 67, of Owensboro, passed away Monday, April 8, 2019 at his home. He was born in Owensboro to the late Homer Winstead and Willie Mae Wimsatt.

Affectionately known as "Poochie" by his family and many friends, he was a jack of all trades who could fix anything. Poochie was a hard worker that worked various jobs before landing at O'Bryan Implement Sales. For the past thirteen years, you could stop by O'Bryan Implement Sales and have a good laugh with Poochie. Poochie would give you the shirt off his back, except his Kentucky Wildcat shirt. He loved grilling, visits from his children, having a good ol' time and watching the Kentucky Wildcats. He cared deeply and genuinely for people. An encounter with Poochie turned into a memorable moment.
Poochie accepted Christ at an early age. Fun fact about Poochie: back in 1968 – 1970, he was the lead singer along with Ronnie, his brother, in the Gospel Travelers. The group included Owensboro songsters such as Roy Simmons, Patricia Hogg, Charles Howell, Clarence Tapp, Joyce Winstead, Jon Patterson, James Mason, and Hugh Frank Talbott. They traveled South Central Kentucky and Indiana singing praises for the Lord.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandchild, India Jones, a mother figure, Mamie Lou Rowan and a brother, Robert H. "Pee Wee" Wimsatt.
Poochie's memories will be treasure by his devoted wife of 21 years, Gloria M. Winstead and proudest accomplishments his children Andrea L. Berry (Brian) of Clarksville, TN, John A. Winstead, Jr. of Owensboro, James H. Winstead of Frankfort, KY, Antonia S. Mack (Romell) of Arlington, TX, Ru'Nisha L. Winstead and Adriana D. Winstead, both of Rockport, IN; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Jan Rowan of Owensboro, Sharon Thomas of Shelbyville, KY, Tammy Winstead of Lewisport, Teresa Jackson and Tonia Thomas, both of Owensboro; brothers, Charles Howell and Ronnie Johnson, both of Owensboro. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The service will be at Noon, Saturday, April 13 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory where visitation will be from 11 AM until service time. A repast will follow the service at Asbury United Methodist Church, 2711 Cravens Avenue in Owensboro. The family requests that any food items be taken to the church Saturday morning after 10:00 AM.
