John Martin Sweeney

John Martin Sweeney, 81, of Owensboro, passed away on November 1, 2011 at his residence.
He was born in Daviess County to the late John A. and Emma Rose Sweeney.

John was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church. John was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping and bowling. At one time he was also a good square dancer and traveled with the "Owensboro Twirlers". He will be remembered as a loving husband and a proud father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Cindy Johnson, in 1993 and four brothers, Herman, Walker, Amos and Albert Sweeney.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Wanda M. (Woolen) Sweeney; son, John "Marty" Sweeney, Jr. (Slim) both of Owensboro; four grandchildren, Chris Johnson (Robin) of Owensboro, Kevin Johnson (Sandra) of Philpot, Kelly Johnson (Andrea) of Utica and Kaelin Johnson (Shannon) of Owensboro; great grandchildren, Tyler, Ryan, Gabriel, Sharon, Andrea, John, Cole, Clayton, Alexis, Dillon and Beau; sister, Dorothy Willyard of Owensboro and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 4, 2011 in the chapel at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Rev. James Wedding will officiate. Burial will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Friday from 11:00 am until service time at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Hospital for Children 1900 Richmond Road Lexington, KY 40502.
