John L. Medley

John L. Medley, 80, passed from this world on Friday, April 1, 2011. Born March 26, 1931, he was the youngest son of the late Charles Lill Medley and Alma Simmons Medley. His paternal grandparents were John Quincy and Laura Hitchcock Medley. Maternal grandparents were Curtis and Susan Simmons. He was preceded in death by brothers Michael, Arville, Jack, and Roger Medley and by sisters Patricia Rose Medley, Susan
Alvey, Janette Petrella, and Mary Ethel Ward. One brother, Leon, survives, as well as many nieces and nephews.

"John L" is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth Ann "Libby" Isbell Medley. Surviving children are Joy Medley Lyons (David) of Park City; Monica Calhoun (David) of Owensboro; Claudia Book (Brent) of Duluth, Georgia; Susan Medley Algie of Palm Harbor, Florida; John L. Medley II (Laura) of Owensboro; Jeffery Parker
Medley of Sorgho; and Laura Potts (Steve) of Owensboro. Grandchildren are Rebekah and Hayley Lyons, Stefan and Vanessa Calhoun, Brandon Towery and Ross Book, Rachael Simon and Harley Ann Algie, Aaron and Evan Medley, and Jakob Stiff. John L. had a special relationship with his grandchildren, who loved him very much. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.

John was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed attending
reunions of his Beachmasters unit over the years. Following the war, he was an engineering student at the University of Kentucky for two years. The majority of John's working years were spent with the Owensboro Millwright Local Union 1080. John attended estate auctions for many years. He was an avid reader of regional history and faithfully purchased a used Dodge pickup when he wore out his old one. John enjoyed the peaceful rural settings of Daviess, Mclean & Ohio county and raising horses, mules, and sheep on one of several small farms he owned.
John and Libby raised their children in Sorgho, in Daviess County, where all seven children attended St. Mary Magdalene Elementary School. Mrs. Medley continues to serve as an active member of that parish.

Final arrangements are under the direction of Glenn Funeral Home. Per John's wishes, there will be a private visitation for immediate family only, on Tuesday, April 5th. Mr. Medley chose cremation. A celebration of John's life will be
held on Wednesday, April 6, at Precious Blood Catholic church at 1:00 PM, with a meal to follow.
