John D. Jones

December 17, 1925 — May 24, 2005

John D. Jack Jones, 79, of 1127 Griffith Avenue, Owensboro, died Saturday, May 21, 2005, at his home. Born in West Point, KY, a son of the late William Jessie and Jacie E. Jones, he attended Missouri Valley College, the University of Notre Dame, and received a Bachelors of Science in Commerce from the University of Kentucky. He was a member of Lewis Lane Baptist Church. A Navy veteran of World War II, he later joined Sears Roebuck and Company and became assistant national buyer for china, glass, lamps, mirrors, pictures and giftware. In 1955, he came to Owensboro to become involved in the commercialization and development of Miler Lakes, the well-known regional recreation area which he served as president until his retirement in 1986. He was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky F&AM at the Miles Lodge, a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masons SJUSA 32nd degree, a member of the Rizpah Shrine of Madisonville, and was a Kentucky Colonel

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ione Miller Jones, his daughters, Terry Jones Smith of Owensboro, Leigh Jones Dunnington and Judy Jones Hauth of Indianapolis, and Sara Jones Biden of Philadelphia, eight grandchildren, Christopher A. Smith of Owensboro, Phoebe Smith Dingman of Santa Ynez, CA, J-D Smith of Tuscon, Amber Ione Smith of Hollywood, CA, Nicholas Coleman Biden, Jamie Biden, and Caroline Biden of Philadelphia, and a great-granddaughter, Elanora Rain Smith of Tucson; and his sister, Eula Wright of Cecelia, KY.

Services are at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at Glenn Funeral Home, where visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday and after 11:00 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
