John “Mark” Johnson, 73, of Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at the Heartford House under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born March 26, 1952 in Daviess County. Mark was retired from A K Steel as a steel inspector and was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he was an elder and the church treasurer. He was an active Session member and leader of the church stewardship committee. Mark had also worked at the Messenger-Inquirer, the Perry County newspaper, and Shield Security. He was an avid reader, studied and loved history, had an awesome collection of model trains, radio control airplanes and helicopters, and was a member of R C airplane and train clubs. Mark also loved sports cars, cooking. woodworking, and painting pictures. Other things he loved were motorcycles, boating, and camping. Mark was preceded in death by his father, Ben M. Johnson, Jr., and his beloved bulldog, Boone.
Mark was survived by his wife, Deborah Johnson; mother, Ruth Johnson; three sons, James Lambert (Alicia) Philpot, Jason (Johnson) Moore and Jeremy Johnson (Marisa) all of Evansville; four grandchildren, Kyle Lambert and Baili Alexander (Matt) of Philpot, Chase and Maya Johnson of Evansville; two great grandchildren, Tanner Lambert of Falls of Rough and Myles Alexander of Philpot; a sister, Nancy Sewell (Bill) of Owensboro , a brother, Ben M. Johnson III of Paducah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Thursday, January 22, at Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Entombment will follow in Owensboro Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Visitation will be from 11 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM at the church.
