John W. Hayden

November 12, 1920 — January 27, 2005

John W. Hayden, 84, of 4437 Hillcrest Oaks, Owensboro, died Thursday, January 27, 2005 at his home. The Daviess County native was born to the late J. Burch Hayden and Mary Byrne Hagan Hayden and was retired from South Central Bell Telephone Company as an equipment switchman. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of Blessed Mother Catholic Church, Sorgho Knights of Columbus, Telephone Pioneers, and a former Boy Scout leader. He loved to fish, enjoyed camping at Kentucky Lake, hunting, nature, playing poker, watching ball games on television, and being with his family.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Eugene B. Hayden, J. Burch Hayden Jr., and sisters, Mary Robert Boone, Lillian Fink, and Dorothy Kerstetter.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Johnson Hayden, a son, John W. Hayden Jr. of Sunnyvale, CA, daughters, Ellen Higdon and Marian Baker of Owensboro, Virgina Mapes of Pocatello, Idaho, Marti Payne of Meritt Island, Florida, sisters, Rita Secor and Barbara O'Bryan, both of Louisville, Kentucky, and his grandchildren, Joshua Hayden of Los Angeles, CA, Ben Hayden of Modesto, CA, Julia Klein of Los Angeles, JeNelle Gouvas of Whitehouse, TN, Lydia Fusco of Hartford, KY, Eva Charnes of O'Fallon, MO, Ryan Higdon and Leslie Dukate of Owensboro, James Allen Baker of Ft. Walton Beach, FL, Lee Hakanson of Niceville, FL, Luke Hakanson of Destin, FL, Ella O'Bryan of Paducah, KY, Caitlyn Payne and Holly Payne of Merritt Island, FL, and seven great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be Saturday, January 29, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Mother Catholic Church, with entombment in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday with prayers at 6:00 p.m. Friday, and also 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Glenn Funeral Home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Hospice Association Inc. Memorial Fund.
