John M. “Jack” Grimes, 89, of Owensboro, passed away September 7, 2025. Born February 10, 1936, to the late Thomas M. and Mayme Stengell Grimes, Jack was a proud graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School. He spent his professional life working as an accountant for Green River Steel, where his attention to detail and steady hand earned the trust and respect of those around him.
A faithful member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, Jack lived a life rooted in kindness, gratitude, and service to others. He cherished his faith and community deeply.
Jack was known for his quick wit and love of laughter. He believed each day should start with a smile and often greeted his family with a funny comment or a playful joke first thing in the morning. His humor was lighthearted, contagious, and a gift to everyone around him.
He also found great joy in traveling with his beloved wife, Nancy Whittaker Grimes, who preceded him in death. Together, they were married fifty-eight years, and shared a love for Broadway shows, live concerts, and fine dining. Discovering a new favorite restaurant, whether it be on a special day, or any other, was a delight he often celebrated with his signature phrase, “We’ll have to make this an annual thing.”
More than anything, Jack treasured his family. They were his pride and joy, and his greatest accomplishment and constant source of happiness.
Jack is survived by his children, Steve Grimes (Rebecca Spangler), Janet (Joe) Ruth, Mike (Mindy) Grimes and Thom (Scott Seay) Grimes; grandchildren, Jeremie (Jen) Ruth, David (Lizzie) Ruth, Wilder Grimes, and Evalee Grimes; bonus grandson, Lee Spangler, and great-grandchildren, Kayla, Van, and Lilli.
The Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday with prayers beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service Friday, at the church.
