John C. Flinn, Jr., 94, (formerly of Owensboro) passed away Saturday, January 21, 2012 at Hope Hospice in Cape Coral, FL. Born November 28, 1917 in Wilmington, Delaware, he was in the first class to graduate from Pierre S. DuPont High School and designed the senior class ring. As a young adventurer, he loved sailing and toured the country on his motorcycle. Mr. Flinn married Kathryn Ann Fleahman in 1943 and was holding her hand 55 years later when she passed away. He was also preceded in death by his son, John Daniel Flinn, in 1999.
Mr. Flinn joined the Army Air Corps in 1943 and was the co-pilot of "Destiny's Child" a B-17 he flew out of England during World War II and earned an Air Medal. He was a member of the 91st Bomb Group Memorial Association and served as secretary/treasurer, the Owensboro Flotilla of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and was a Kentucky Colonel. Mr. Flinn was a retired steel cabinet manufacturing supervisor who loved to paint and play golf. His family was always of primary importance to him.
He is survived by his daughter, Rodlyn R. Woodward, Cape Coral, FL; grand children, Angie Woodward of Owensboro, Ashley Mitchell (Vincent) and Tara Agnew (John) of Ft Myers, FL, Michael Flinn and Marcus Flinn of Pennsylvania; six great-grandchildren. They, along with extended family will miss him.
Private services will be Friday, January 27, 2012 in the Chapel of Owensboro Memorial Gardens with Father Bruce McCarty officiating and military honors rendered by the Wright-Patterson AFB Honor Guard and VFW Post 696.
