John D. Campbell

John D. "Jack" Campbell, Jr., 87, of Owensboro, passed away January 28, 2013 at his home. Born in Davidson County, TN, the son of the late John Daniel and Sarah Elizabeth Carney Campbell, he grew up on the family farm in Whites Creek, TN. He attended high school there until his sophomore year before he began commuting into downtown Nashville where he could take physics and chemistry classes. Jack studied at Vanderbilt University until the outbreak of World War II saw his enlistment in the United States Navy. Following the war, he returned to Vanderbilt where he received a degree in electrical engineering. While there he met Doris Beam, a student at Scarritt College whom he married shortly after their graduations. Jack began his career with General Electric in Erie, PA, followed by assignments in Syracuse, NY, and Pittsfield, MA. He was transferred to Owensboro in 1950 and remained with General Electric for 36 years and with MPD for 6 years until his retirement. A member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and its Open Door Sunday School Class, he was also active with Habitat for Humanity, served as treasurer for the Owensboro Concert Association and the HELP office, and was active with the No Name Club and the GE Lunch Bunch. He was very committed to Camp Loucon, the United Methodist Church camp in Grayson County, where his work was recognized by a cabin being constructed in his name. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Lillian Hester Meadows and Edna Louise Roberson.

Survivors include his wife, Doris Beam Campbell; his sons, Stephen Mark Campbell (Karen) of Owensboro, John William Campbell ( Kathryn Robertson Campbell) of Columbia, IL; his daughter, Jean Elizabeth Childers (Don) of Naperville, IL; his grandchildren, James Robertson Campbell, Margaret Bowling Allen, Elizabeth Anne Zanter, Mark Christian Campbell, Katherine Anne Childers, Daniel Joseph Childers, and Lauren Elizabeth Childers; his great grandchildren, Miranda Elaine Campbell and Lillian Blythe Campbell; and his sister, Eleanor Doris Horner of Nashville.

Services, officiated by the Rev. Darren Brandon, will be 12:00 noon Friday in the Chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where visitation will be from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Thursday and after 11:00 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Habitat for Humanity or the HELP Office.
