John Edward "Jack" Beam of Lane Road, Owensboro, Kentucky, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at Heartland Villa in Lewisport, Kentucky. He was born September 21, 1928, in Bardstown, Kentucky to the late John Hubert and Nell Bradbury Beam. Mr. Beam graduated from the Western Kentucky University College of Business in 1949 and went on to become an accountant. He was an astute business man who worked in the gas and oil industry, was involved in real-estate development of both homes and commercial properties in Bardstown and was also involved in a number of apartment projects in both Texas and Kentucky. He built the first nursing home in Bardstown, The Colonial House, he went on to build Glasgow Rest Home, Barren County Health Care Center and Hart County Health Care Center in Horse Cave, Kentucky and was co-owner of Golden Years Nursing Home in Lackey, Kentucky. He was co-owner of the race horse, "Double Your Fancy", was an avid golfer who also enjoyed many sports including basketball, baseball and football. Mr. Beam was a member of the Old Kentucky Home Country Club, the Owensboro Country Club, where he served on the board from 1971-1973, and the Campbell Club, where he served on the board for over 30 years. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Beam Cross, half sister, Margaret Mae Woodard Guthrie, and half brother, Henry Lee Woodard.
Survivors include his wife of 17 years, Linda R. Beam; his children, Nancy Mollett and her husband Ralph of Owensboro and John Beam of Idaho; grandchildren, Aimee Lee Greer and her husband Brett, Joshua Story, John Lee Beam, Jr., Justin Beam and Bernadette McKenzie; great-grandchildren Madalyn Story, Olivia Greer, John Tyler Beam, and Trinity Beam; step-sons, James Strobel and his wife Marni and Shelby Strobel and his wife Angie; step-grandchildren, Kelsey, Mary Ellen, Elizabeth Ann, Margaret Ruth and Sarah Francis Strobel and Dutch, Reed and Dawson Strobel; a sister, Mary Ann Hurst of Bardstown; and 7 nieces and nephews.
Mr. Beam was a very generous man and private philanthropist.
Services will be held 10 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory and will be officiated by Dr. Paul Strahan and Father Ed Bradley. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. and after 9 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
