John R. Bayless Sr., 77, of Owensboro, passed away Friday, July 4th, at Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville Hospital. He was born August 8, 1947, in Parsons, Kansas, to the late Bob and Dorothy Bayless. John proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968, during which he participated in the Vietnam War aboard the U.S.S. Okannogan, where he earned the nickname "Mouse." An avid outdoorsman, John had a profound love for fishing and camping. His interests extended beyond the outdoors; he was a devoted fan of wrestling and movies, and he collected wrestling figurines, Hot Wheels cars and trucks, and Navy memorabilia, including various hats that celebrated his proud service. His beloved Red Ram Truck was a source of joy, and he relished the moments he spent driving it, exploring the world around him. John’s profound love for family was at the core of who he was. He cherished every moment spent with them, always eager to create new memories and share in their joys.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by a sister, Billie Peregrine.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 57 years, Olive Bayless; daughter, Amy Hemphill (Shawn); sons, John Bayless Jr. and Donald Bayless (Emily); sister, Roberta Cantrell; brother, Claude Bayless (Carol); grandchildren, Tanner Bayless, Shawn Hemphill Jr., Blake Hemphill, Cody Hemphill and Alexander; and great granddaughter, Evelyn Hemphill.
