Joenelle Mason Kirk

Joenelle Mason Kirk, 94, of Philpot, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2007, at Hillcrest Health Care Center. She was born March 7, 1913, to the late John Robert Lee Mason and Sarah Jane Park Mason in Centertown. She was the youngest of eight children and, at the age of eight, moved with her family to Owensboro.

She graduated from Owensboro High School in 1929 and from Western Kentucky State Teachers College in 1933. On May 18, 1946, she married Ernest Winford Kirk, of Habit. Mrs. Kirk taught 38 years in various Daviess County schools, including West Louisville High School and Daviess County High School. She was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Sunday School class. She often said she loved her Lord first, her family second, and her students third. She greatly enjoyed music and literature.

Mrs. Kirk was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Winford Kirk, in 1998.

She is survived by her son, Dr. Robert M. Kirk of Owensboro; her daughter, Ann Kirk Futrell and her husband, Charles, of Philpot; a granddaughter, Joenelle Lorraine Futrell of Philpot; three nieces, Jane Newman of Owensboro, Shirley Wilson and her husband, Dr. Dale Wilson, of Saginaw, MI, Nancy Williams and her husband, Rev. Gerry Williams, of Bonita Springs, FL, and a nephew, Stillie Lee Mason of Dawson Springs, KY.

Services will be 1:30 PM Saturday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Todd Love and Rev. Mark Benton officiating followed by burial in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford. Visitation will be 2:00 until 7:00 PM Friday at Glenn Funeral Home with visitation on Saturday after 12:30 PM at the church.
