Joel Vincent Boone, 68, of Owensboro, died Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Owensboro Medical Health System. He was born July 8, 1942 in Owensboro. He attended Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, was a member of St. Stephen Cathedral, the National Rifle Association, a twice appointed Kentucky Colonel, and a veteran of the United States Navy. While serving in the Navy, he was one of 16 chosen for the Honor Guard when the body of President John F. Kennedy was moved from the White House to the Capitol Rotunda. He graduated from Owensboro Catholic High school, attended Brescia University, was a former employee of Central Bank and Trust and retired as a bank examiner for the Kentucky Department of Financial Institutions, having traveled all over the state for 30 years. His knowledge of the English language earned him the nickname "Wordman" from his co-workers and made him an interesting conversationalist. He was also an expert on Kentucky history.
Joel enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, watching the weather and history channels, Jeopardy, Antiques Roadshow, and movies. He loved his home, especially sitting by the fire or out on the deck visiting with family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, nephew, uncle and friend. Preceding him in death were his parents, Raymond O. and Mary Hayden Boone; his brother Gene Boone; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Laurie and Bob Pecha, Nancy and Don Rhodes, and Natalie Zambrano; and his sister-in-law Cindy Boone.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Woodlee Johnson Boone; his daughter Allyson Boone Paauw and her husband Rob, of Louisville; his stepchildren, Chad Johnson and his wife Nicole of Nashville, Misty Cartwright and her husband John of Buchanan, GA, and Jeremy Johnson and his wife Hannah of Waseca, MN; his brothers, Michael Boone of Owensboro, and Julian Boone and his wife Mari of Quincy, IL; his sisters, Julie Boone of Owensboro and Marilyn Lally and her husband Bernard of Carmel, IN; his brother-in-law, Alan Zambrano of Owensboro; and his grandchildren, Troy and Tayler Paauw, Melissa and Ross Johnson, Sydney Cartwright, and Lindi, Annalia, Katie Beth, Davey, and Jason Johnson.
The funeral service for Mr. Boone is at 12:00 noon Wednesday at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 10:00 until 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory, where prayers will be said at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Burial, with full military honors, will be in the Veterans Field of Honor at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
