Joe Tanner, 66, of 1721 Mohawk Drive, Owensboro, died Wednesday May 30, 2001 at Owensboro Mercy Health System. Born October 31, 1934 in Owensboro, he was the son of Dorothy Tanner Miller and the late Perry Tanner.
Mr. Tanner retired after 31 years as a State Farm agent. He was a member of Immaculate Catholic Church where he was the first president of Immaculates Mens Club. A member of the Owensboro Rotary Club, he was also past president of the Owensboro Jaycees and a former Outstanding Young Man of the Year. A member of the board of directors of the Wendell Foster Center for 42 years, he had served as its chairman and was currently serving as treasurer. He was a former chairman and current member of the Library Board, a former executive of the Audubon Council of Boy Scouts of America, and a former member of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce board of directors. Mr. Tanner had been active in youth baseball, having served as president of the Owensboro Babe Ruth League, Senio Babe Ruth, and a founder of the 13 Year Old Babe Ruth World Series.
Mr. Tanner is survived by his wife of 44 years, Pat Tanner; one son, Mike Tanner of Lexington, KY; one daughter, Marsha Strein of Lexington; four grandchildren; his mother, Dorothy Miller of Owensboro.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 2, 2001 at Immaculate Catholic Church officiated by Father Timothy Sweeney. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday June 1, 2001 at Glenn Funeral Home and from 9:00 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
