JoAnn S. Castlen

JoAnn D. Castlen, 89, of Owensboro, passed away April 9, 2017 peacefully at home. She was born in Jefferson County on November 3, 1927 to the late Joseph J. and Hasile Helmer Smith. JoAnn graduated from Presentation Academy in 1946 and went on to spend a year at Western Kentucky University, where she met and married Elwood Castlen on October 8, 1946. They were happily married for 70 years. JoAnn earned her Real Estate license in 1963 and later co-founded Castlen Realty where she spent 23 years before her retirement in 1986. After her retirement, she and Elwood traveled around the world with their friends. To JoAnn, her greatest joy was being a mother and a wife. She found happiness in her children and had a passion and devotion for the Lord and the Virgin Mary.

JoAnn is preceded in death by her son, Tom G. Castlen. She is survived by her husband, Elwood Castlen; sons, Steve Castlen, Michael Castlen, Bill (Shelia) Castlen; daughters, Rose (Mike) Garant, Donna (Gerard) Johnson; nineteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren; and her furry four-legged friend, Smitty.

Services will be noon Wednesday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Fr. Pat Reynolds officiating. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Jinah Sayed, Dr. Dhiren Haria, Owensboro Health Regional Hospital nurses and staff and all her loving friends who cared for her.
