Joan Marie Payne

Joan Marie Payne, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister, lived a life filled with kindness, generosity, and love for her family. Born January 5, 1941, in Owensboro, Kentucky, Joan was the daughter of Robert Hamilton Payne and Ruth Gomer Payne. She grew up with her sisters, Patsy Payne Graf and Marilyn Payne Rose. She was preceded in death by her sister Marilyn.

Joan graduated from Catholic High School in 1960 and became executive secretary to the president of Texas Gas. She later devoted herself to making a loving home and raising her three children, supporting their endeavors and welcoming their friends as though they were her own. When she returned to professional life, she pursued a career as a court reporter.

Joan had a gift for making people feel welcome. She never knew a stranger, and her home was a gathering place where there was always room for another friend and another plate at the table. A wonderful cook, she put love into everything she made. The meals she shared were one of the many ways she cared for the people around her.

An avid reader, Joan also loved the sunshine and the beach. Above all, she treasured time with her family. She shared a special relationship with each of her grandchildren, making each one feel individually known and deeply loved. Her kindness was present in the everyday moments—the conversations, the meals, the encouragement, and the simple comfort of being together.

Her family includes her three children, Andi Bamberger Grant (Steve Carby) of Shelbyville, Kentucky; Ronald Saul Bamberger (Jennifer) of Hendersonville, Tennessee; and Eve Holder of Owensboro, Kentucky; and her sister, Patsy Payne Graf. She was a cherished grandmother to seven grandchildren: Nicolas Bamberger (Angie), Alexandra Grant Teets (Paul), Madison Grant McDaniel (Brian), Simon Isaac Bamberger (Gracie), Maxwell Holder, Samuel Holder, and Hannah Holder. Her love extended to her six great-grandchildren: Nicholas Bamberger, Waylon Bamberger, Jakey Bamberger, Aria Quinn Teets, Laurel Rose McDaniel, and Silas Teets.

Joan leaves her family with memories of a welcoming home, food made with love, and a kindness that reached everyone fortunate enough to know her. The care she gave so freely will live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the many friends she treated as family.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Joan Payne at 2:00 pm Saturday, November 28 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with same day visitation from 12:00 until 2:00 pm.
