Jimmie J. Coleman, 85, of Owensboro, died Saturday, January 3, 2009, at Bon Harbor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born September 6, 1923, to the late Baxter and Victoria Garner Coleman in Butler County. He retired from General Electric, was a member of Eaton Memorial Baptist Church, and an Army Veteran of WW II, where he received a Purple Heart, serving in the Asiatic Pacific and Philippines, receiving the Lib Ribbon and the Bronze Arrowhead. He always enjoyed being around his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Jean Coleman on December 14, 2000; his foster parents, Louis and Earl Lindsey, and six brothers and sisters.
Survivors include his daughter, Deloras Whitmer and her husband, Ellis of Owensboro; two granddaughters, Amy Matthis and Lora Wellman and her husband, Jimmy, a step-granddaughter, Shelli Whitmer; two great-grandchildren, Jakob and Luke Wellman; a brother, Billie Coleman of Louisville.
Services will be 12:00 PM Wednesday, at Glenn Funeral Home with burial in Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM Tuesday and after 11:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Eaton Memorial Baptist Church, 1225 West 3rd Street, Owensboro, KY 42301.
