Jim Shrewsberry

James "Jim" Shrewsberry, 91, of Owensboro, passed away November 29, 2023, while under the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky. Born on July 15, 1932, in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, Jim graduated from Breckinridge County High School in 1950 and then enlisted in the US Army and served in Korea during the war. Following his military service, he pursued higher education at Western Kentucky University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1958 and a Master of Arts Degree in 1959.

Jim was a person who held a deep appreciation for excellence in every role he assumed throughout his career. He pursued two primary career paths during his lifetime: construction and education. Jim dedicated 27 years to teaching Industrial Arts and Drafting at Owensboro High School, along with instructing Engineering Drawing at Brescia University. In his construction and building career, he actively participated in various commercial and community projects. Notable examples include his involvement in constructing the Teachers Credit Union, contributions to Habitat for Humanity, and numerous projects at Camp Loucon Methodist Church Camp, where a building stands in his honor.

Jim was an active member of Settle Memorial Methodist Church, engaging in numerous mission trips, both domestically and internationally. He was also a dedicated member of the Open Door Sunday School Class.

A sports enthusiast, Jim thoroughly enjoyed cheering for his alma mater, Western Kentucky University, as well as Owensboro High School, Kentucky Wesleyan College, and the University of Kentucky. Jim had numerous hobbies, including being a licensed pilot who loved to fly, completing crossword puzzles, and maintaining an extensive stamp collection.

Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Jim was well aware of his distinctive sense of humor and his remarkable knack for eliciting laughter from those around him. That laughter echoed almost every morning at McDonald's as he enjoyed breakfast with his men's group. Above all, Jim cherished his family and the moments spent with them, particularly the precious time he shared with his grandchildren.

The family expresses their gratitude to the Heartford House and ICU staff at Owensboro Health for their compassionate care and support.

Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Virginia Shrewsberry; his aunt and uncle, Charlotte and Dallas Taul; and his in-laws.

Those left to remember Jim include his loving wife of 49 years, Lyllis Whitford Shrewsberry; children, Laura Shrewsberry-Clarkston (James), James R. Shrewsberry (Shelly), and Matthew D. Shrewsberry (Katie); grandchildren, Garrett, Sydney, Molly, and Cooper, and three great-grandchildren.
