Jewel D. Dukes, 94, of Owensboro, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2024 under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky. He was born in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky to the late Atlas and Marie (Boley) Dukes.
Mr. Dukes worked for Pepsi-Cola for more than twenty-three years. He was an energetic person and a hard worker, often working more than one job at a time and retiring at the age of 88. Those jobs usually involved maintenance or truck driving. Jewel liked being outdoors and he could “outpick” much younger people in the blackberry patch! He was an outgoing man who never met a stranger, a wise man, and a member of Owensboro Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dezester Jean Evans Dukes in 2004; a daughter, Brenda Jean Lutz; and a sister, Katherine Lemaster. His wife, Shirley Dukes passed away less than three hours after Jewel surrounded by the same group of family that had been there when he passed.
Jewel is survived by his son, Steven Dean Dukes (Janet) of Owensboro; a step-daughter, Theresa Humphrey (Martin) of Owensboro; step-son, Charles Thomas Pierce (Erma Lee) of Owensboro; grandchildren, Danielle Overfield (Roger), Julie Christine Miller (Donald O’Bryan), Amy Dukes (Josh), Ashley Hofmann (Josh) and Eric Dukes; and several great and great-great grandchildren.
The service will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 20 at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be held Friday from 3:00 until 7:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM until the time of service. Burial will be at Cherry Grove Cemetery in Weir, Kentucky.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Kentucky, 3419 Wathen’s Crossing, Owensboro, KY 42301.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to caregivers Jo Barnett and Dianne Carden, for the dedication and care provided to Mr. Dukes.
