Jerome" Jerry" Mezur passed peacefully, Friday, Sept. 30, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born September, 23, 1942, to the late Alexander M. and Mary Agnes Gallagher Mezur.
In his younger years growing up in Cincinnati, OH, he played for a National Championship Baseball Team alongside major leaguers, Eddie Brinkman, Pete Rose, and Roger Staubach. Mezur himself went on to Xavier University to play baseball. After graduation is where his legacy started to form as a beloved coach in any sport you can think of, he was all in, right down to driving the kids on the bus.
Coach Mezur, as he was affectionately known, began his teaching career in 1963.
In 1965, Coach Mezur accepted a position as the head coach of the Owensboro Catholic High Schools baseball team, but with a true sports and kids driven heart, he didn't stop there, he also was the assistant coach for both the football and basketball teams.
Following the birth of his 2 children, Brian and Tina. Coach Mezur, drove the Audubon for his first time to accept a job with the Henderson County School System in August 1968. He worked for 30 years full time as a Teacher/Athletic Director until his retirement June 1998. Mezur was not fully ready for retirement so he returned as a part-time employee in the Athletic Department in 1998 and continued for 18 years through 2016. Mezur dedicated 48 years to Henderson County Schools and 53 years in the field of education. Coach Mezur will be greatly missed and HCHS will honor his memory and legacy.
Among his many accomplishments was running Paddock Swim Club for 38 years. It was a hard job watching over all those "little pool rats", but someone had to do it. Mezur's job at the pool wasn't over when he left, he had to make sure he followed up with the parents of the kids who weren't meeting his expectations for the day. Audrey can recall him standing at the phone calling each and every one of them before they even got home for the day.
First and foremost Jerry was mentor, coach, and fan to his children and grand-children. He rarely missed an event that they were involved in. That mentality carried over into his day to day life with his family at home. A day never went by that he didn't talk about his family.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Audrey, daughter, Tina (Greg) Gough, Son, Brian (Kim) Mezur, grandchildren; Tyler, Emily, Tanner, and Tucker Mezur, Hunter (Lacey Luttrell), Isaac, Mary Katherine, Austin, and Ethan Gough, sister, Jo Ann (Donald) Perro, and his canine companion, Ellie Mae.
