Jean Cox Sumner, 92, of Owensboro, passed away on Wednesday, November 8th in the care of Hospice of Western Kentucky surrounded by her loving family. Born on March 28, 1925, in Monticello, KY, she was the daughter of the late Grover C. and Hattie Jane Cox. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sister Catholene Pollock, brothers, Bernard, Casey, and Grover C. Cox, Jr.
Jean was a charter member of Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church where she served many roles, including nursery teacher, member of the choir, administrative board, Vanguard Sunday School Class, 1215 Club, United Methodist Women, Prayer Shawl Ministry, and the Sojourners Small Group. She took great joy in serving others and will be fondly remembered for her active greeting card ministry. Jean deeply cared about everyone she knew or met, and was a devoted servant of the Lord.
Jean retired from ATMOS Energy where she worked in administration and sales for 31 years. She was active in the American Business Women's Association, Owensboro Hospital Auxiliary, Pitino Shelter, and the Help Office. Jean was an avid reader, worked the daily M&I crossword puzzles, a devoted UK men's basketball fan and frequent sideline coach.
She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Baker of Owensboro and Janice Duke and husband Bob of Nashville; grandchildren Emily Farris of Campbellsville, Amanda Spurrier, Rozalynn (Chris) Martin of Owensboro, David (Kayce) Duke of Nashville, TN, and Katy (Scott) DeHaven of Franklin, TN; great-grandchildren, TeLynn Farris, Arick Groves, Aubrey and Davis Martin, Riley Spurrier, Hudson, Wyatt, Hattie and Lillie Duke, Jacob, Luke and Caroline DeHaven; and brother, Rev. Dr. Billy J (Velma) Cox of Louisville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Wesleyan Heights United Methodist Church, with a private graveside service at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation is from 2:00 to 5:00pm Sunday at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory.
